Halinski receives 2001-2002 McGraw Award for Student Excellence

Released: April 2, 2002

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater senior Megan Halinski of McHenry, Ill. is the recipient of the 2001-2002 McGraw Award for Student Excellence.

“I find it hard to accept something that places me among some of the most successful undergraduate students at UW-Whitewater,” Halinski said.

The McGraw Award is the university’s top student award. It was started in 1985 by Arthur McGraw, a former dean of the School of Graduate Studies to honor a student’s outstanding achievements. The award is presented annually to a senior who is “ready to contribute to society in a positive way.”

To be eligible for the award, student must have completed at least 60 credits from the university and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Students also must be actively engaged in the university and community.

Each college screens applicants and submits a maximum of five candidates to the university selection committee, which decides the recipient.

“We were really impressed with Megan’s accomplishments and high quality of involvement,” said Richard Telfer, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs.

This is the 20th award Halinski has received as a student at UW-Whitewater. In the fall, Halinski was awarded the Richard G. Gaarder Music Education Award and Reuben Klumb Outstanding Senior Award. Furthermore, Halinski has participated in 19 campus organizations including Delta Omicron and Golden Key National Honors Society.

Halinski will receive the award at Spring Commencement on May 18. After graduation, Halinski plans to pursue her dream of teaching band at junior high or high school level.
