The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater College of Arts and Communication has awarded The Greenhill Excellence in the Arts Awards for 2002-2003 to Leslie Conover of Cedarburg, Allison Pearse of Tuscola, Ill. and Katie Plovanich of Kenosha. UW-Whitewater’s most prestigious arts scholarship is given to incoming freshmen majoring in arts, music, theatre or dance.
Conover aspires a career in graphic design. She has been a member of the National Honor Society for the past two years and is involved in a tutoring program, senior citizens’ dances and fundraising. She received the Student Achiever Award three years in a row. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Milwaukee Brewers sponsor the award.
Pearse has been active in theatre productions throughout high school. She has participated in “The Other Side of the Wall,” “Drop Dead,” “West Side Story,” “Guys and Dolls,” “South Pacific” and “Camelot.” During the summer of 2001, Pearse had an internship at the University of Illinois’ Krannert Center for Performing Arts.
Plovanich, class valedictorian at Kenosha Bradford High School, is dedicated to developing her music career. She has performed as first chair trombonist in the WMEA Honors Jazz Band and has had leadership roles in many of her high school ensembles, including the Wind Ensemble, Band, Jazz Band, and pit orchestras.
"The Greenhill Awards are our most prestigious college scholarships,” said John Heyer, dean of the College of Arts and Communication. “They are awarded to exceptionally talented and academically gifted students in national competition and are renewable for the four years of their undergraduate career. We truly appreciate Hannah and Gaylon Greenhill's commitment to excellence in making these scholarships possible."
The $1,000 renewable scholarship, established in 2001, was made possible by the philanthropy of Hannah and Gaylon Greenhill and by generous contributions from friends and colleagues. Candidates must have maintained an overall academic grade point average of 3.0 or higher in high school and must have demonstrated exceptional talent in his or her art.
Continuing Greenhill Scholars are music students Elizabeth Faust of Greendale, Neil Haven of Whitewater and art education student Susan Sutherland of Janesville.
