UW-Whitewater professor to receive national honor for advising
Released: June 7, 2002
Meg Waraczynski, an associate professor of psychology at UW-Whitewater, has been selected as an Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit recipient in the Faculty Academic Advising category as part of the 2002 National Academic Advising Association’s national awards program.
“I think this award means more to me as a member of UW-Whitewater’s College of Letters and Science than it does to me individually,” said Waraczynski. “I hope this affirms to the UW-Whitewater community that good advising is something our peers at other universities value as an important component of our profession.”
This award, to be presented Oct. 1 in Salt Lake City, is given to individuals who demonstrate qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students. The Faculty Academic Advising category includes individuals whose primary responsibility is teaching and spend a portion of their time advising students.
Waraczynski said students spend a lot of energy and money on their courses and they deserve to get the most out of their time at the university. “Advisers can also supplement academic instruction by using advising sessions as teaching moments by helping students develop responsibility for their academic progress,” she said.
Waraczynski received her bachelor’s degree from UW-Milwaukee and her doctorate from Harvard University. She did postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania and Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec before coming to UW-Whitewater.
The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), in cooperation with American College Testing, Inc., honors individuals and institutions making significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising. NACADA promotes quality academic advising and professional development with the goal of enhancing the educational development of students. The over 6,500 NACADA members consist of faculty, professional advisers, administrators, counselors and others in academic and student affairs.
