World Affairs Seminar explores peace in the age of terrorism

Released: June 3, 2002

What makes making peace so hard? That’s the theme for the 26th annual World Affairs Seminar hosted by UW-Whitewater June 9-14. More than 1,000 high school students, many of them exchange students from all parts of the world, come to gain a better understanding of world problems and current issues.

The keynote address, “Is peace possible in an age of global terror?” will be given by Giandomenico Picco on Sunday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Irvin L. Young Auditorium. An Italian national, Picco has been a longtime member of the United Nations and now is an international consultant on non-governmental strategies for promoting peace.

Throughout the week, experts across the country will offer perspectives on conference themes of waging peace in the world. Talks include “Communicating in Search of Peace,” “Peacemaking and the Middle East Crisis,” and “The USA as a Moral Superpower.”

UW-Whitewater faculty presenters include management Professor Jon Werner, who will address problem-solving skills for individuals and groups; geography Professor Karen Barton, who will speak on contested terrain on the high seas; and political science Professor Ken Glaudell, who will cover lessons learned about terrorism’s effect on the peace process.

The World Affairs Seminar was established in 1976 by Dale Brock, an emeritus UW-Whitewater faculty member. Impressed by a world affairs conference for American students he had attended in Cincinnati, Brock was eager to begin such a program at UW-Whitewater. Now in its 26th year, more than 1,000 high school students from all over the world attend each summer.

“This year’s seminar has never been more relevant, considering events like Sept. 11, the potential war between India and Pakistan, and the heightened Israeli/Arab conflict,” said Brock. “It is important for these young people to interact with peers from other countries.”
