UW-Whitewater to host October meeting of UW Board of Regents
Released: September 27, 2002
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will give reports on several top campus priorities, including upgrading advising and constructing a new business building, as host of the Oct. 10-11 meeting of the UW System Board of Regents.
The Board of Regents typically holds two monthly meetings each year outside of Madison, including one at UW-Milwaukee, in order to become more acquainted with the 26 four-year universities and two-year colleges throughout the system. The campus last hosted a statewide regents meeting in 1993.
“This is a valuable opportunity to give regents a sense of the unique character of this institution,” said Chancellor Jack Miller. “As the fourth largest campus in the system which serves a rapidly growing and culturally diverse region, we have no shortage of accomplishments and challenges to address.”
UW-Whitewater agenda topics include:
* A presentation titled “Diversity, Disability and Student Success.” UW-Whitewater has a unique suite of programs aimed at first-generation, multicultural and economically disadvantaged students that nurture success from early grades to graduate school. The campus also has nationally recognized programs serving students with disabilities.
* Reports on a project to strengthen academic advising for undergraduates, through an $800,000 annual differential tuition plan sponsored by student leaders.
* A report on building plans for the College of Business and Economics. The proposed $30 million business building, currently in the top five on system projects, is the university’s top facilities priority.
* A report from Chancellor Jack Miller on a data-driven “report card” system that is designed to keep the campus community focused on common goals, such as graduation and retention, private fundraising and quality teaching.
The university expects roughly 100 visitors for the meeting, including regents, UW System staff and administrative staff from the campuses. Visitors will have the opportunity on Thursday morning to tour campus facilities, including Irvin L. Young Auditorium, the Kachel Fieldhouse and Esker Hall.
An evening community dinner and reception at the University Center will draw roughly 200 guests and feature a medley of entertainment from the department of music students. A breakfast on Friday morning will bring regents together with students involved in service and volunteer programs.
Other agenda items at the meeting include System reports on new indicators for measuring academic quality and on new general purpose revenue (GPR) positions created in recent years.
