Irvin L. Young Auditorium recipient of Target Corporation grant
Released: September 19, 2002
The Irvin L. Young Auditorium recently received a grant from the Target Corporation to support its ongoing efforts to bring art programs to students. The $1,000 grant, awarded in August, will be used to support the Irvin L. Young Auditorium’s Horizons Matinee Series, which serves more than 35,000 students annually.
Target supports Arts in Education grants that bring artists and students together by bringing performers to schools, sending students to see performances or exhibitions, and giving kids a chance to participate in arts workshops.
“Exposure to the arts is an important part of every student’s education,” state program materials obtained from Target. “Unfortunately, school funding for arts programs often takes a back seat to more pressing needs. Arts in Education grants help give students opportunities to explore, experience and create visual art, music and drama.”
“We strive to provide high quality educational performances for schools in southeastern Wisconsin,” stated John Heyer, dean of the College of Arts and Communication. “This grant will strengthen our efforts to keep prices low and ensure access to the performances for all student.”
Since 1990, the Irvin L. Young Auditorium has produced the Horizons Matinee Series. This program was started to expose children to the performing arts and prepare them to be the artists and audiences of tomorrow.
The Horizons Matinee Series presents performances developed specifically for school audiences. Currently, Horizons programming is based on feedback from K-12 students, teachers, and administrators who have recently participated in the series.
