Make UW-Whitewater your homecoming destination

Released: October 10, 2002

UW-Whitewater Homecoming week activities and festivities begin on Sunday, Oct. 6 with Window Painting the University Center and end on Saturday, Oct. 12 with the Warhawk Football game against Stevens Point and post-game activities. Throughout the week student organizations, fraternities and sororities, and residence halls participate in a laundry list of fun competitions towards the coveted Champion’s trophy and Spirit Cup.

“Homecoming events are designed to help all ages celebrate what it means to be a Warhawk and everyone is welcome,” said Jan Bilgen, Homecoming Advisor.

Most of the weekday activities are aimed at a student audience and only student organizations, Greek organizations and residence halls can participate.

With more than 40 organizations registered to compete, this year’s theme, “Destination Homecoming,” gives the organizations the freedom to pick the destination of their choice to base their parade float, variety skit, or window painting on, said Bilgen.

For alumni returning to Whitewater for homecoming weekend, the theme “Destination UW-Whitewater” would probably be more appropriate. Alumni homecoming activities begin on Friday night with the class of 1952, 50-year reunion at the James R. Connor University Center. Homecoming festivities continue on Saturday at 9 a.m. with coffee, cookies and cocoa at the Alumni Hospitality Tent just south of the Alumni Center, followed by the homecoming parade at 10 a.m., which will march east on Main Street to Fremont Street.

After the parade, activities move to the Big Tent outside of Perkins Stadium.

A Polka Band in the Big Tent will get your feet tapping while burgers, brats, beans, soda and chicken breast sandwich fill your appetite. Wet your whistle with a special Warhawk Wheat homecoming brew available for purchase. All proceeds from the homecoming brew will benefit UW-Whitewater Alumni Association activities. The special brew was created for UW-Whitewater’s Homecoming by Randy’s Restaurant and Fun Hunters Brewery in Whitewater.

Other Whitewater Chamber of Commerce members are getting into the homecoming spirit and will be offering Homecoming coupons to encourage you to stop, shop and eat locally.
