UW-Whitewater student will intern with Wisconsin Supreme Court

Released: October 29, 2002

Every spring, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Law Society takes a trip to the Wisconsin Supreme Court to watch a few cases and have lunch with the justices. But last spring, a unique opportunity arose.

“I happened to be sitting at the table with Justice David Prosser,” said political science major Tracy Erickson of Fort Atkinson. “I was telling him about my internship, which I had at Jefferson County over the summer. He asked why we never have anybody up in his office.”

Erickson pursued the chance to work for the state Supreme Court justice and, with the help of political science chair John Kozlowicz, will begin her internship in Justice Prosser’s next semester.

“Tracy is a first-rate student and the internship will give her a leg up when applying for law school,” said Kozlowicz.

The Supreme Court is an appeals court, so Erickson will most likely read over cases, write synopses and research the origins of different laws. She will also work with law clerks that are recent law school graduates.

“A lot of people who go to law school haven’t interned anywhere,” said Erickson. “Schools will look at this experience and it will set me apart from other students.”

“By having Tracy do a good job, it will open up opportunities for other students because they will see the quality of UW-Whitewater students,” said Kozlowicz.

After her internship last summer, Erickson said that she really enjoys the excitement and variety of working in the criminal justice system and would like to work as a prosecutor.
