Released: December 5, 2002

Steve Kazar, director of international education and programs at UW-Whitewater, has been selected to serve on a national panel that will promote greater connections between universities and the U.S. State Department.

The Global Access Project (GAP) is composed of representatives from 11 universities across the country. Kazar will serve as Wisconsin’s only representative. Participants were nominated by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). The group will hold its organizational meeting in Washington, D.C. on December 14.

The purpose of GAP is to increase college students’ understanding of international affairs and the work of the State Department. It also seeks to stimulate interest in careers in the field of international relations and diplomacy.

As a campus coordinator for GAP. Kazar will help create program opportunities for students both in Washington, D.C. and locally. Opportunities will include foreign policy seminars, digital and satellite conferences, and presentations by State Department leaders.

With coordination from AASCU, the GAP committee will work to produce programs that will serve as a resource for international education programs across the country. In addition to UW-Whitewater, participating campuses include: Ball State, Dickinson State, Georgia Southern, Old Dominion, Portland State, South Dakota State, Troy State, Nebraska-Omaha, the University of North Carolina System, and Western Connecticut.
