UW-Whitewater Kemper Scholar awarded for 2002

Released: December 5, 2002

Andrea Sabelko, a UW-Whitewater freshman business student from Altoona, is the winner of the prestigious Kemper Scholars Grant for 2002.

“Andrea is an excellent choice to be a Kemper Scholar,” said Chris Clements, dean of the College of Business and Economics. “She is an extremely bright, poised and enthusiastic young woman.”

UW-Whitewater is one of only 19 universities in the country eligible to participate in the Kemper Scholars Grant program. Each eligible institution selects individuals from the freshman class who are the nominees for the program. The Kemper Foundation then selects one of the nominees as a Kemper Scholar. The scholars are chosen on the basis of character, motivation, maturity, academic success and interest in business.

Kemper Scholars receive grants of up to a maximum of $8,000 per academic year, based on financial need. The scholars are also given an internship for three summers at the Kemper Insurance Companies of Chicago.

“This is just such an awesome opportunity,” Sabelko said. “The internship will give me great experience in so many areas of business. It will be a good way to find out which field of business I want to pursue.”

The Kemper Scholars Grant Program was started by the James S. Kemper Foundation and is one of the nation’s longest-running programs that links summer internships with undergraduate education.
