Reid named new university police chief
Released: January 27, 2003
John Reid is returning to his native Wisconsin roots to become the new director of University Police and Security at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Reid comes from the University of Arkansas where he served as captain and second in command of the university police department. Reid has been on the University of Arkansas staff since 1992, prior to that he was a Waukesha County deputy sheriff.
“We feel very fortunate to attract someone with Reid’s credentials and qualifications,” said Jim Freer, UW-Whitewater Vice Chancellor for Administrative Affairs.
“He is a highly skilled police professional that has an appreciation of and commitment to the unique role of policing in a university environment.”
Reid earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee and is presently working on a master’s degree in Criminal Justice.
Some of the challenges and goals that lie ahead for Reid when he officially takes over his post on Feb. 12 include forming a partnership with the university’s criminal justice program incorporating the use of students to help deliver new and different services on campus. Some of those services may include outreach work with various departments such as Leadership Development, University Center events and athletics. These divisions can provide guidance and assistance to develop partnerships for event management and security.
According to Freer, Reid will also continue to strengthen relationships with local police and municipalities developing positive working relationships.
Reid replaces Jan Goder, who retired after serving as the director since 1986.
