Warhawk volleyball champions to be recognized

Released: January 18, 2003

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s volleyball team will be recognized Jan. 24 for winning the 2002 NCAA Division III Championship. The event is located in the Hamilton Center of the University Center on campus and begins at 7 p.m.

Head coach Kris Russell, along with several members of the team, will talk about winning UW-Whitewater’s first national championship in volleyball. The team will also be presented awards and have the national championship trophy on display.

The Warhawks have hosted the national championships in each of the last two years. On Dec. 7, 2002 in the championship game, they defeated heavily favored and nationally ranked Washington University of Missouri in three straight games, 30-24, 30-28, 30-25.

By winning the title, the Warhawk’s volleyball team earned the university its fourth national championship in the history of the athletic program.
