Released: February 11, 2003
On Monday, February 24, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Harold G. Andersen Library will begin a yearlong celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Andersen Library building.
The Library first opened its doors on February 25, 1953, with a collection of 41,000 items and a staff of six. Today, it boasts a collection of two million items and a staff of 27 librarians and library assistants.
The following dates have been set aside to celebrate Andersen’s anniversary:
— The week of February 24 will feature a library display and bookmarks honoring moving day.
— September 28 will mark the naming of the Harold G. Andersen Library and the Dwight Warner Browsing Room.
— October 23 will commemorate the Library’s dedication 50 years ago.
Library staff members are also in the process of creating exhibits on the changes that have taken place over the last 50 years. Alumni, faculty, staff and community members are invited to share any memorabilia, anecdotes or other contributions they may have to make the anniversary celebration a success. To share memories or make a donation, contact Sharon Knight at (262) 472-5515 or knights@uww.edu or Barbara Bren at (262) 472-5521 or brenb@uww.edu.
A design contest for a new graphic to represent the Library and its mission is also being held. The contest is open to UW-Whitewater students, faculty and staff. For more details on the contest, pick up a copy of the rules at the Circulation Desk in Andersen or visit http://library.uww.edu.
