Two UW-Whitewater students land prestigious theatre internships

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater graduating seniors Marcus Truschinski of Marshall and Rick Pendzich of South Milwaukee have been selected for the world-renowned American Players Theatre internship. The Theatre, located in Spring Green, Wis., offers four internships annually and holds nationwide auditions to fill the slots. The fact that two interns have been hired from the same school is a first in the Theatre’s history.
“In the past, many of the Theatre’s interns have come from larger professional training schools or are professionals,” said Jim Butchart, associate professor of theatre. “The fact that two students from UW-Whitewater’s bachelor of fine arts program have been accepted indicates that the training here, especially in classic theatre, is at level with the best schools in the country.”
The American Players Theatre is a professional, classical theatre set in a natural amphitheater. Shakespeare is the heart and soul of the Theatre, along with works ranging from the Greeks to British comedies. The 28-member acting company produces five plays performed in a repertory. Founded in 1979, the Theatre is the second most popular outdoor classical theatre in the country and was the recipient of the Tony award for outstanding regional theatre.
“This internship will be a large stepping stone for me,” said Truschinski. “I’m going to have to continue to work hard, just as I have done in the past. The American Players Theatre is a new beginning for me as an actor.”
Pendzich couldn’t agree more. “I’m very honored to have such a great opportunity so soon after graduation. At the American Players Theatre, I will not only get to work with professionals, but I will also get time on stage. I really love performing Shakespeare and I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
