UW-Whitewater to host U.S. Department of State expert on Brazil

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, together with the State Department Global Access Project, will host a series of talks by State Dept. official James J. Carragher on Wednesday, April 30.

Carragher has been the U.S. Department of State Director for the Office of Brazil and Southern Cone Affairs since September 2002. Prior to this, he was coordinator for Cuban Affairs after serving as deputy chief of mission at the United States Embassy in Santiago, Chile. Carragher has also served in Buenos Aires, San Salvador and Harare, Zimbabwe. A native of Batavia, New York, Carragher earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California-Berkeley and his master’s degree from the University of California-Irvine.

Three sessions will be held on April 30. They are as follows:

— 9-10 a.m., Roseman Auditorium – “Mass Media Infrastructure in Brazil” Carragher will discuss the Brazilian communication industry in contrast to other Latin American countries, including issues of freedom of the press and media ownership concentration.

— 11-12:30 p.m., Roseman Auditorium – “What We Do: The U.S. State Department” Carragher will provide general information about the State Department and career opportunities in the fields of international relations and diplomacy.

— 3:30-5 p.m., Carlson 3002 – “Travel: Brazil” This session will be aimed at those students enrolled in the travel study course, but is also open to all those interested in learning more about Brazil. Topics addressed will include the history, architecture, politics, economics, art and education of Brazil.
The purpose of GAP is to promote greater connections between universities and the U.S. State Department. Steve Kazar, director of International Education and Programs, was selected as Wisconsin’s only representative out of 11 universities across the country.
