UW-Whitewater helps to raise alcohol abuse awareness

Released: April 9, 2003

On Monday April 14, UW-Whitewater is hosting a double event in an effort to promote public awareness about the consequences of high-risk drinking and alcohol’s effect.

The event opens with National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) and will take place from 6-7 p.m. and then again from 8-9 p.m. in the James R. Connor University Center in the Hamilton Center. It is free and open to the public. The intent is to educate the public about alcohol and provide a screening opportunity for those seeking help. The screening will include a questionnaire, availability of health care professionals for one-on-one discussion and referrals to local treatment facilities and support services.

Following the first session of NASD is the second part of the evening,“Happy Hour Comedy Tour” from 7-8 p.m., also in the Hamilton Center. Comedian Bernie McGrenahan, who travels nationally to college campuses, will address how alcohol abuse has affected his life, including his younger brother’s suicide and his own battle with binge drinking.

Sponsors of this double event are Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity, University Health & Counseling Services; the UW-Whitewater Inter-Fraternity Council; the Office of Residence Life; the Student Assistance program; UW-Whitewater Recreation Sports and Facilities; Whitewater Student Government; UW-Whitewater Residence Hall Association; and Wisconsin Wetgoods Company, Inc.
