Chancellor, two staff members receive national advising honors

Released: June 5, 2003

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Chancellor Jack Miller and two staff members, Debra Heiber and Susan Johnson, have received national recognition for their work with student advising.

Miller received the 2003 Pacesetter Award from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), the nation’s leading organization devoted to advancing the academic support needs of students. NACADA includes more than 6,700 members nationally.

The Pacesetter award is given annually to one chief executive officer, provost or other academic leader who exemplifies a commitment to academic advising and is a true advocate for students and advisors.

The award directly recognizes Miller’s leadership in helping found the new Academic Advisement and Exploration Center, which is greatly expanding the academic support available to students in their first two years. The center helps students make the right academic choices before declaring their majors and helps flag early academic trouble, with the ultimate goal of increasing campus graduation and retention rates.

Heiber, director of advising for the College of Letters and Sciences; and Susan Johnson, assistant professor of political science; were also recognized in the 2003 NACADA National Awards Program for Academic Advising.

Heiber was named an Outstanding Advising Award Winner in the Academic Advising Administrator category. Recipients of this award must have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students or outstanding academic advising administration. Heiber is one of six advising administrators to be honored with this award in a nationwide competition.

Johnson has been named an Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit recipient in the Faculty Academic Advising category. Recipients of this award must have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students or outstanding academic advising administration. The Faculty Academic Advising category includes those individuals whose primary responsibility is teaching and who spend a portion of their time providing academic advising services to students. Johnson is one of 13 faculty advisors honored nationally.

Since 1983, NACADA has honored individuals and institutions making significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising. The goal of NACADA is to promote quality academic advising and professional development of its membership to enhance the educational development of students.

Miller, Heiber and Johnson will be honored in Dallas, Texas, during the annual NACADA National Conference in October 2003.
