Adrian Sherman of Ithaca, N.Y., has been selected as the new international education director at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater beginning Sept. 1. He replaces former director Stephen Kazar in overseeing study abroad and exchange programs for undergraduate students.
“I am passionate about increasing the awareness of internationalism on this campus,” Sherman said. “I believe international experience in some form is critical to every student’s education.”
For the past five years, Sherman has served as the director of international programs at Ithaca College, a private school with about 6,000 students. He was also the dean of international and travel programs at Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn., for four years prior to that.
Sherman received his doctorate degree in preventive mental health from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville; his master’s degree from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.; and his bachelor’s degree from California State University in Chico, Calif.
“I support Chancellor Miller’s goal of having 10 percent of UW-Whitewater undergraduates be involved in some type of international experience,” Sherman said.
In Spring 2003, the office of International Education and Programs reported that more than 140 students participated in study abroad programs. For the semester-long exchanges, 25 UW-Whitewater students traveled to Australia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. Another eight went to Costa Rica, France, Italy, Semester at Sea, Spain and the Virgin Islands. Short term travel included: 36 for Brazil; 24 for Ireland; 24 for Central Europe; 15 for Paris; and 12 for the Jamaica Service Learning Experience.
