UW-Whitewater to hold memorial observance of 9-11 attacks
Released: September 8, 2003
The university community and area residents are invited to gather at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on the morning of Thursday, Sept. 11, to remember those lost in the terrorist attacks against America two years ago.
The observance will be held on the south end of the University Mall, outside the University Center. The ceremony will run from 8:45 9:15 a.m., approximately the East Coast time when the World Trade Center and Pentagon were hit by hijacked planes.
Against a backdrop of footage from the attacks, university and student leaders will offer brief remarks, and ROTC students will raise the American flag. Students will also light two lanterns, symbolizing the two towers of the World Trade Center, which will burn in tribute throughout the day.
“As we remember the tragic events and loss of two years ago, faculty from the music department will perform appropriate selections,” said Paula Mohan, a professor of political science who is helping organize the memorial. “Students from the art department will also construct the ‘Twin Towers’ in chalk on the mall. People will have the opportunity to write their thoughts and reactions in chalk.”
Visitors are also invited to bring flowers or other appropriate items to lay in tribute at the base of the towers during the ceremony and throughout the day. For more information, please contact Mohan at (262) 472-5772.
