Opportunities knock at UW-Whitewater 'Hawk Career Fair
Released: September 16, 2003
Employers expect to hire 12.7 percent more new college graduates than last year, according to a survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. That's encouraging news for those attending the 'Hawk Career Fair at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Wednesday, Sept. 24. from noon to 4 p.m. in the Williams Center. More than 85 companies will be on hand to network with current students, alumni and community members.
Career Services Director Craig Mosurinjohn noted that the market brings a real mix of hiring opportunities right now, but that jobs are always available. The more popular fields include accounting, retail, financial services, healthcare and computer-related. Although teaching positions are not promoted at the fair, Mosurinjohn said that "businesses love hiring education majors because of their written and verbal communication skills and experience with presentations."
Most of the participating companies are from Wisconsin. Examples include: Deloitte & Touche, Carson Pirie Scott & Co., Kohler Co, Financial Decisions Group, Wells Fargo, Target Stores, Harley-Davidson and American Marketing and Publishing. Interested employers can register to participate up to the day before the fair.
Mosurinjohn emphasized that across almost all fields employers look at four potential areas: related experience, communication skills, technical skills and leadership. Students can participate in two pre-fair workshops on how to write a resume and how to interview. The night before the fair students may attend an etiquette dinner to learn what to order, how to communicate and how to dress for success. They can also research companies of interest through an easy-access online site.
