UW-Whitewater student sings her way to prestigious first place award
Released: October 21, 2003
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater senior Angela Mortellaro, a voice performance major, was one of three opera singers to place first at the Wisconsin District Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions. At the age of 21, Mortellaro is the youngest to win this award in the Wisconsin district. She will advance to the regional auditions in Minneapolis in January 2004.
“This is such a huge accomplishment for me,” said Mortellaro, of Germantown. “I am extremely honored and thrilled by this award.”
This is the first time a student from the UW-Whitewater department of music has won this award, which carries a $3,100 prize.
“It is rare for an undergraduate to win such a prestigious recognition,” said Carlene McMonagle, coordinator of voice studies.
If Mortellaro places at the regional auditions, she will advance to the national auditions in New York in March 2004. The winner of the national auditions will earn the opportunity to rehearse with the acclaimed Metropolitan Opera.
