First Lady Jessica Doyle visits UW-Whitewater campus
Released: April 22, 2004
On Wednesday, April 21, First Lady Jessica Doyle met with approximately 20 UW-Whitewater students in a forum to discuss community service on college campuses. Her visit to Whitewater on Wednesday is a part of a UW System-wide tour to encourage volunteerism among college students.
“Doing community service in college is really about adopting a new approach to life,” Doyle said. “It is our hope that once students begin volunteering they will continue to do so long after they graduate.”
Doyle commended UW-Whitewater students for their outstanding commitment to community service. Over the past four years, UW-Whitewater student organizations have completed more than 350 community service projects, and students have contributed more than 76,000 hours of community service. In the 2002-03 academic year, those same student organizations served nearly 80 community agencies and made more than $40,000 in philanthropic contributions, according to Ron Buchholz, director of Leadership Development.
The First Lady also got an insider’s view of the many different community service projects several student organizations are doing this year. Student representatives were on hand from the Nursing Home Visitation Program, Habitat for Humanity, Adopt-A-School, America Reads, Ethan Allen School for Boys, Social Work Student Organization, Student Optimist Club and Whitewater Student Government.
“I am amazed by the level of caring on this campus,” Doyle said. “There is something very special happening here. I commend the efforts of the students, faculty and staff of UW-Whitewater.”
