Media Advisory: Habitat for Humanity home dedication May 1
Released: April 27, 2004
After seven months of hard work, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater chapter of Habitat for Humanity will hold a dedication ceremony to formally hand over the keys to the home they have been building for the Brittain family of Darien.
The ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 1, at 2:30 p.m. at the home site located on the corner of Eighth Street and Ann Street in Delavan. Members of the Brittain family and several of the student workers who helped build the home will be available to the media for interviews.
This was the first home-building project in the UW-Whitewater campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity’s 15 years of existence, and was an entirely student-run project from start to finish. The students not only raised $45,000 to build the home, but also worked every Friday and Saturday since ground was broken back in September 2003. As a result of the student’s successful fund-raising efforts, the lot of land adjacent to the Brittain home has been donated to the chapter and the affiliate to build a second house beginning June 2004.
The Brittain family also contributed 250 “sweat equity hours” by participating in Saturday home-building workdays, maintaining upkeep on the lot and working at the Walworth County affiliate’s Hike for Humanity fund raiser in October 2003.
The Brittain family is composed of soon-to-be homeowner, Kathy, and her three children and eight grandchildren. The family of 11 currently resides in a two-bedroom apartment in Darien.
