McKellips named Director of Admissions at UW-Whitewater

Released: July 19, 2004

Stephen J. McKellips, assistant director of admissions for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, has been named the new director of admissions for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater effective August 15.

McKellips has been UW-Milwaukee’s assistant director of admissions since February 2004 where he oversaw the determination of residency for tuition purposes, supervised the awarding of transfer credits and developed online recording features for other university departments to record their communications with prospective students. McKellips also provided admission-related information and training to UW-Milwaukee student services units and coordinated on-site admission activities in Milwaukee Public Schools for more than 200 applicants of color annually.

As director of admissions, McKellips’ primary responsibility will be to develop and manage all activities related to new student recruitment, including: development of recruitment publications, Web-based recruitment initiatives, high school relations’ activities, including campus visitation programs, and coordination of the undergraduate scholarship and nonresident fee remission programs.

McKellips shares UW-Whitewater’s commitment to target the retention of returning students and has as one of his main goals for the Admissions Office at UW-Whitewater to seek out new, efficient and cost-effective ways to communicate to prospective students the campus-wide commitment toward student success.

“We need to make sure that prospective students know that UW-Whitewater wants them as graduates more than they want them as students, and that the university is willing to do whatever it can to help make that goal a reality for all its students,” said McKellips.

McKellips also hopes to evaluate UW-Whitewater’s current recruitment model to see where changes or innovations in technology might be helpful, including the creation of an online applicant self-service function enabling prospective students to lead themselves through the admissions process.

“I believe that the top students are looking for colleges to meet them outside the regular recruitment paradigm, and I think there are things that a campus can do to make themselves more attractive to a more talented student pool by meeting them ‘outside the box,’” added McKellips.

Prior to becoming assistant director of admissions at UW-Milwaukee, McKellips served as admission supervisor in the department of enrollment services at the university.

McKellips received his master’s degree in communication from UW-Milwaukee in 2000 and his bachelor’s degree in broadcast and electronic communication from Marquette University in 1992.

McKellips will succeed Tori (McGuire) Erickson who served as director of admissions from July 1997 to June 2004.
