‘Hawk Career Fair bigger and better in 2004’

Released: September 14, 2004

The third annual 'Hawk Career Fair at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 29, from noon to 4 p.m. in the Williams Center. More than 100 employers wanting to fill internship and post-graduate professional employment opportunities will be attending the fair. Is this a sign that college hiring is on the rise?

According to a survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the answer is yes. The Midwest expects a 26.4 percent increase in college hiring this year, the highest in the nation. Among those who project hiring increases, attrition and increased demand for goods and services were cited as reasons.

“Employers are really champing at the bit this year to meet with prospective graduates,” said Craig Mosurinjohn, director of Career Services.

Most of the participating companies are from Wisconsin, including Alliant Energy, Bethesda Lutheran Homes and Services, Inc., Bliss Communications, Carson Pirie Scott & Co., Frito-Lay, Kohler Co., M&I Bank, Madison Gas and Electric, Metavante, PricewaterhouseCoopers, SC Johnson, State of Wisconsin-Office of State Employee Relations, Target Stores and WPS Health Insurance.

Top employers of recent graduates include accounting services, retail, financial services, banking (commercial/investment), insurance, consulting services, government and computer systems design and programming.

Mosurinjohn emphasized that across almost all fields, employers consider the following in candidates they’re interested in hiring: related experience, communication skills, analytical skills, initiative, strong work ethic, teamwork, flexibility and leadership.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in two pre-fair workshops entitled “Writing Targeted Resumes” and “Preparing for On Campus and Home Office Interviews.” The night before the fair students can also attend the “Etiquette Dinner and Dress for Success” event from 5:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in the Hamilton Center. The dinner will focus on what to order, how to communicate and how to dress for success.
