UW-Whitewater to observe third anniversary of September 11 attacks

Released: September 2, 2004

Members of the university community and Whitewater-area residents are invited to gather at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on the morning of Friday, September 10, to remember those who were killed in the terrorist attacks on the United States three years ago.

The memorial will be held on the south end of the University Mall, outside of the James R. Connor University Center. The ceremony will occur from 8:45 – 9:30 a.m., approximately the East Coast time when the World Trade Center and Pentagon were hit by hijacked planes.

Music department faculty member Matt Sintchak will perform musical selections and members of the Native American Cultural Awareness Association will be drumming. Several university and student leaders will also offer brief remarks, including Chancellor Miller.

Students from the art department will be constructing the “Twin Towers” in chalk on the mall, as well as a symbol of the Pentagon and the crash site of Flight 77. Chalk will be available for anyone wanting to express their thoughts and reactions beginning at 3 – 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, and after the ceremony on Friday.

Visitors are invited to bring flowers or other appropriate items to lay in tribute on the University Center island, representing “Ground Zero,” during the ceremony and throughout the day.
