Student interns with Door County Peninsula Players
Released: September 13, 2004
In an open sided theater surrounded by cedar forest and a sunset view, UW-Whitewater senior Neil Haven got to work alongside some of the best actors in the country this past summer. The theater major from Whitewater landed an internship in technical theater with the Door County Peninsula Players who perform for thousands of visitors each year.
Haven’s behind the scenes tasks included box office sales, light board, sound board, scenery and costumes and assistant stage manager for one show. He also participated in several acting workshops.
“I got an all around education on how theater works in its entirety,” Haven said. “It was great to meet professionals in all areas, especially such talented and successful actors.”
Haven lived in a boathouse overlooking Green Bay with eight other interns. Six days a week, 11 hours a day, they worked closely with the other 53 people in the company. The Peninsula Players put on three productions while he was there, two of them Neil Simon comedies.
With his eyes set on a career in acting after graduating next May, Haven said he now knows a lot of contacts, especially in Chicago and Milwaukee where he plans to audition. He will draw from his extensive experience at UW-Whitewater where he has played a “broad and diverse” set of characters.
Currently, Haven is writing his first play, a “romantic comedy with some twists,” which will be performed March 11 and 12 in Hicklin Theater on campus.
