17 things to do at Warhawk Homecoming

"Darkness Creeps Through Whitewater" is the theme of this year’s Homecoming at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Halloween-based theme kicks off the week of Sunday, Oct. 24, with the annual window painting competition at the Graham Street Café in the University Center. On Thursday, Oct. 28, beginning at 8 p.m., the Variety Show will take place in the Irvin L. Young Auditorium. Friday night at 6 p.m., the “Yell Like Hell” Spirit Rally will be in the Williams Center.
Alumni festivities begin Friday morning and end late Saturday afternoon. Following are 17 things for alumni and friends to do on the UW-Whitewater campus during the Homecoming 2004 weekend.
Friday, Oct 29
- The Crossman Gallery is hosting the Bushman/Gunderson Alumni Exhibit from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Greenhill Center of the Arts. David Bushman ‘67 will display a variety of recent prints, watercolors and drawings. Karen Gunderson ’66 will show a series of historical portraits done in her “black painting” style.
- The Class of 1954 Reunion Social Hour will be held in the University Center Commons from noon to 1 p.m. The reunion continues with a luncheon that concludes at 4 p.m.
- Women’s Volleyball Invitational will be held in the Williams Center starting at 3 p.m. with matchups between the Warhawks, Washington University, UW-Platteville, Baldwin Wallace and Lakeland College.
- The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Irvin L. Young Auditorium. Magical classics like Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture, Dvorak’s Cello Concerto, Mendelssohn’s the Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave) and Brahms’ Symphony #3 will be directed by Hungarian-born Gregory Vajda.
Saturday, Oct. 30
- The Bushman/Gunderson Alumni Exhibit continues at the Crossman Gallery from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Greenhill Center of the Arts. - The Alumni Association viewing tent will be set up on Main Street from 9-11 a.m. serving complimentary juice, coffee and cookies for all alumni and friends.
- The Homecoming Parade begins at 10 a.m. at the Center of the Arts parking lot. The parade will move east down Main Street, past the Alumni Association viewing tent and conclude by Fremont Street.
- Women’s Volleyball Invitational will continue in the Williams Center with matches starting at 10 a.m. between the Warhawks, Washington University, UW-Platteville, Baldwin Wallace and Lakeland College.
- The Big Tent outside Perkins Stadium is the place to be for the pre-game tailgate party from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Enjoy the music of Piper Road Spring Band while drinking a beer and eating a brat or burger.
- The College of Arts & Communication is having a Wine, Cheese and Brass Reception in the Greenhill Center of the Arts Atrium from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Come for the refreshments, stay for the music.
- The College of Business and Economics will be hosting its 13th Annual Reunion and Open House from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Beattie Library, room, 2002 in Carlson Hall. Food and refreshments will be served and the Alumni Faculty/Staff Recognition Award will be presented.
- The College of Education is throwing a Wine and Cheese Reception in the University, room 219. Alumni are encouraged to attend and catch up with old friends. The reception will run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
- The 37th anniversary of UW-Whitewater’s physical education major will be recognized with a guided tour through the new Kachel Fieldhouse and the renovated Williams Center. The tour begins at 11:30 a.m. in room 106 on the main floor of the Williams Center.
- Let the game begin! At 1 p.m., the Warhawks take on the UW-Steven’s Point Pointers in Perkins Stadium.
- “The Odyssey of Jeremy Jack,” an interactive children’s play, begins at 2 p.m. in Barnett Theatre. The audience will tag along with a turtle named Jeremy Jack as he learns to accept himself for who and what he is. Tickets are available online and at campus ticket outlets.
- The College of Letters & Sciences is hosting the second annual “Poetry and Petri” in the newly renovated Upham Hall from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Events include: music of the Jazz Symposium, readings of original prose and poetry, a presentation titled, "Origins of Biodiversity: Lessons from Fish” and an insider’s view of criminal analysis.
- This year marks the 40th anniversary of the UW-Whitewater Athletic Hall of Fame. The 2004 class of inductees, which includes eight athletes and one coach, will officially be inducted at a banquet and ceremony in the University Center after the game.
