UW-Whitewater named one of America’s best disability–friendly campuses

Released: August 22, 2005

College students with disabilities may find life easier going at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. In the July 2005 issue of New Mobility magazine, UW-Whitewater was named one of the Top 10 "disability-friendly" public universities in the U.S. Notes New Mobility writer Kelly Mack, "For a small university, the Whitewater campus of the University of Wisconsin has a great deal to offer students with disabilities. Starting with scholarships and ending with career counseling, the Center for Students with Disabilities touts a range of services to meet students’ needs."

Citing such programs as adaptive intramural and competitive sports, physical therapy, rehab nursing and assistance in finding attendant care, Mack says that UW-Whitewater does a great job of easing the transition from high school to college. She notes that a campus group, Students for an Accessible Society, hosts a variety of events during the year, and that the school’s wheelchair basketball team brought home a national championship for the third year in a row in 2005.

The distinction as one of the nation’s "best" public universities for disabled individuals comes as no surprise to Nancy Amacher, senior director of the Center for Students with Disabilities who says, "The university provides an environment for students with disabilities that respects and values student choice, promotes self-determination and academic success, and provides services based on individual needs that ensure access to all University activities and events."

"As a staff member, I am proud to be a part of this type of campus environment and climate. It is not just staff members of disability services that promote these concepts and ideas, but all aspects of the campus from administration, faculty, staff and students."
