Employers seek job, internship candidates at career fair
Released: September 26, 2005
College students have a lot of stress in their lives-- class assignments, part-time jobs, finding time for friends, surviving away from home, and of course, finding the perfect career. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Career Services and the College of Business and Economics is easing some of this stress for students by joining together to help them find those perfect careers. The fourth annual 'Hawk Career Fair Sept. 28, noon to 4 p.m. in the Williams Center, is an opportunity for students of any degree level to meet with employers who are searching for internship and career candidates.
"Having over 100 employers in one place is really beneficial to students," Career Services Associate Advisor Kathy Craney said. "It makes it easier for students to look for jobs and pass out resumes."
The 'Hawk Career Fair will feature 112 employers looking to fill positions at companies around the Midwest. Companies represented this year include: American Family Insurance, Bliss Communications, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, M&I Bank and Quad Graphics. Company representatives will be searching for students of all majors and career interests. Listed positions for recruitment range from marketing, accounting and sales, to communications, sciences, arts and government affairs.
"I think we have a really good representation of employers for all students," Craney said.
Juniors and seniors can use the career fair as an opportunity to find internships and post-graduate jobs, practice business etiquette skills and network with professionals. Freshmen and sophomores who aren't quite ready to apply for jobs can get a peek at what to expect from the job search process and gather information from employers about career options.
"Students can use the career fair along with Career Services workshops to sharpen interview skills and get resumes into shape," Craney said.
Craney's No. 1 piece of advice for students planning to attend the career fair is to look at the list of companies that will be in attendance ahead of time at http://www.uww.edu/hawkcareerfair and decide which ones are of most interest. Links to each of the companies' Web sites makes it easy for students to research the employer.
Career Services Program Manager Gail Fox suggests students talk with company representatives even if they are not officially recruiting for a student's desired position. Asking representatives for the contact information of another department at the company can also be beneficial to a job search.
Most participating employers prefer students dress professionally, but business casual dress is required. For a list of employers who will be represented at the 'Hawk Career Fair and tips for success, visit http://www.uww.edu/hawkcareerfair.
