Chinese delegation to visit UW-Whitewater
Released: October 6, 2005
A unique collaboration between the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Shandong Normal University in China will bring two Chinese representatives to Whitewater to learn about athletic and recreation programs and meet faculty. Shandong Normal University representatives Zhaoxi Wang, vice president, and Tao Yu, dean of the College of Physical Education and Sports, will visit from Sunday, Oct. 9 to Oct. 16.
“This is an opportunity to help UW-Whitewater students and faculty learn more about diversity,” UW-Whitewater Assistant Professor of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching (HPERC) Guoli Liang said. “Working with the Shandong representatives will help improve UW-Whitewater’s reputation and international network.”
During their visit, Wang and Yu will work with UW-Whitewater faculty to develop a faculty exchange program, student teaching program, field study program, sports camps and travel study program between the two universities. Liang hopes that UW-Whitewater will send a few faculty members to China next year to teach recreation, health and human performance courses in exchange for a few of Shandong’s professors, which will benefit the entire College of Education, not just the physical education department.
“The collaboration will also help build a relationship between the two institutions and their communities,” Liang said.
Currently, a summer travel study program to several Chinese universities and sports facilities is planned for May 2006. In addition, summer sports camps will be arranged with Shandong. Wang and Yu will visit the UW-Whitewater football, basketball, baseball and volleyball teams to meet and talk with the students and coaches about possible summer camp opportunities in China.
Aside from campus meetings, the Shandong representatives will also visit the Kettle Moraine and Whitewater school districts and Miller Park in Milwaukee to get a more comprehensive view of Wisconsin’s recreation and athletic education programs and facilities.
