Edward S. Curtis exhibit draws record-breaking crowds

Released: October 27, 2005

Nearly 5,000 visitors passed through the doors of the Crossman Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to see the highly-publicized “Sacred Legacy: Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indian” photo exhibit, making it the most successful exhibit in the gallery’s more than 30 years of existence.

“This was the most successful show since I’ve been here,” said Michael Flanagan, Crossman Gallery director. “We’ve usually averaged about 1,000 visitors for previous exhibits.” Over the course of the show, 14 different states throughout the U.S. were represented by visitors and alumni.

The exhibit showcased 70 images drawn from an ongoing European tour and from the archive of the personal collection of Christopher Cardozo, a worldwide leading authority on Edward Curtis and his photography. Hartman Lomawaima, director of the Arizona State Museum spoke Oct. 18, author Joseph Horse Capture spoke Oct. 13 for the event and the film “Coming to Light: Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indian” was shown for the duration of the exhibit in support of the photography.

“People came with specific intent to see the show,” said Rick Fassl of the Whitewater Arts Alliance. “It surpassed all my expectations.”
