Understanding Disabilities: Fire Prevention Guidelines

Released: October 3, 2005

Chancellor Saunders recently sent a memorandum to all faculty and staff regarding emergency evacuations from buildings.  Because October 10-16 is Fire Prevention Week, this month's column will reemphasize this important issue.

Faculty and staff are expected to direct evacuations from their work areas including classrooms.  They are responsible for knowing the primary and alternate routes of exit.  When the situation involves a disabled student, they will assist according to students' directives given at the beginning of each semester.

Ask students at the beginning of each semester whether or not anyone needs assistance in exiting the building in emergencies.  Work out a plan for either getting that student out of the building or to an appropriate place to wait in the building until rescue help can reach that student.  This could involve the use of a buddy system.  Classroom instructors are responsible for the entire class, not just for one student.  A plan is needed ahead of time.

"Guidelines for Disabled Student Building Evacuation Due to Fire or Tornado" are available.  If you need a copy of this brochure or have any questions, please contact the Center for Students with Disabilities (4711) or Risk Management & Safety (1856).
