Released: October 11, 2005
Nobu Asaoka, a certified calligrapher, will be presenting the ancient art of Japanese calligraphy in a free workshop on Thursday, October 20, 2005. The workshop sessions will be held from 1:30 - 2:50 p.m., 3:10 - 4:30 p.m. and 5 - 6:20 p.m. in the James R. Connor University Center, room 213. Knowledge about calligraphy and the language are not required. All the equipment will be provided to learn basic techniques and practice balances, strokes, stops and splashes.
This is the first Japanese calligraphy workshop offered at UW-Whitewater. Japanese instructor Kasumi Kato said, “I would like to provide an opportunity for the community to experience the art form of the Japanese calligraphy. The calligraphy traces its origin to China, and was introduced into Japan around the 8th century.”
Reservations can be made by e-mail. Please include your name, which session you will be attending and “Japanese calligraphy” in the subject line of your e-mail. Seats are limited to 20 per session, so reservations will be made on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information, contact Kato at katok@uww.edu.
