Junior Jennifer Steele appears on MTV’s “Miss Seventeen”

Released: October 13, 2005

Jennifer Steele, 20, a journalism major at UW-Whitewater, will appear as a contestant on the MTV reality show “Miss Seventeen.” Seventeen ambitious young women, ages 18 - 21, compete in weekly challenges for a chance to win a college scholarship and a paid internship at Seventeen.

Steele saw a casting call ad in Seventeen magazine early last spring and traveled to Minneapolis for the last audition in the area. Things fell into place when MTV flew her to Los Angeles for a call-back interview. In June, while at home in Wisconsin Dells for summer break, she was notified that she was chosen to be a contestant on the show and began filming in New York in July.

Steele said, “Being on the show has given me confidence and helped me learn more about myself. I also made friendships there that I will have for the rest of my life.”

“Since both of her parents are incarcerated, Jen is working three jobs to put herself through college. Despite all this, she describes herself as ‘perky and happy,’” her profile on Seventeen.com reads.

Steele said, “I have always believed that people underestimate me and I knew that if I didn’t audition I would regret it for the rest of my life.”

“Miss Seventeen” premieres Monday, October 17, 2005 at 9:30 p.m. CDT on MTV.
