Multicultural students excel at Leadership Conference

Released: November 9, 2005

University of Wisconsin – Whitewater students found success at the American Multicultural Student Leadership Conference (AMSLC) Friday Oct. 7- 9 at University of Wisconsin - Parkside. UW-Whitewater received 13 awards in total: three first, second and third place awards along with four Changemaker Awards, as well as one honorable mention.

The AMSLC provides University of Wisconsin System students of color and economically-disadvantaged students with a forum to advance and share their academic experiences. The conference provides these individuals with an opportunity to study and learn through seminars and practice.  Seminars on public speaking, organizational skills, conflict resolution and diversity sensitivity training are just a few examples of the many opportunities offered in an effort to prepare participants for future leadership roles in public and private organizations throughout their careers.

“The conference allows students to bridge the achievement and professional gap,” said McNair Scholars Program Director Richard McGregory. “The highpoint of the conference is for students to see each other present their work in a professional format.”

Student’s works were judged in predetermined categories including creative writing, visual arts, posters, race and ethnic research papers, and an open topic research paper. For the second year, the Changemaker Award was also presented to recognize a student’s involvement, volunteerism, leadership and community service for their campus. A first place award received $800, second places received $600, third places received $400, an honorable mention received $200 and a $250 award was attached to the Changemaker Awards.
