Habitat for Humanity Awareness Week Nov. 14-18

Released: November 15, 2005

The University of Wisconsin – Whitewater student chapter of Habitat for Humanity will hold a cardboard shack sleep out fundraiser Wednesday, Nov. 16 as part of Habitat Awareness Week Nov. 14-18. Habitat members will sit on the Walker D. Wyman Pedestrian Mall from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. then move outside the library on Main Street where they will sleep all night in boxes to raise community awareness about homelessness.

UW-Whitewater’s Habitat for Humanity chapter has raised $3,871 so far this year working toward its goal of $6,000 for 2005-06. Habitat raised $6,889.56 in 2004-05 exceeding its goal of $5,000.

To kick off Habitat Awareness Week, Chancellor Saunders spoke yesterday (Monday, Nov. 14) about her recent trip to Mississippi and the devastation she saw from Hurricane Katrina. Habitat Awareness Week will also feature the Campus Ministry Center Thanksgiving Dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.

Habitat for Humanity International is a Christian organization that helps build simple, decent, affordable houses for underprivileged families. With about fifty active members, the UW-Whitewater chapter plays an active role on campus. It coordinates annual events that allow the chapter to raise money to build new homes for families in need of quality housing.
