UW-Whitewater professors lead Holocaust travel study

Released: November 14, 2005

Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany will be the travel destinations of students, faculty, alumni and community members participating in the “Remembering the Holocaust” travel study program this summer, July 17-28, 2006. Guided tours and individual exploration of historically-significant areas will help participants look at the Holocaust from historical, religious, societal, psychological and literary perspectives.

“Each student will see and feel how powerful these places are, even sixty or more years after the conclusion of World War II,” University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Professor DeWitt Clinton said. Clinton will lead the program along with UW-Whitewater Lecturer Paula Mohan.

Clinton said Poland is of particular significance to the trip because it is where the greatest number of Jews were confined in ghettos. “Our visits to places like Treblinka,  a death camp, and Krakow, featured in the movie Schindler’s List, will provide an in-depth experience to those trying to understand what happened in Poland,” Clinton said.

Anyone interested in the program can enroll in up to three undergraduate or graduate credits. Highlights of the trip include visits to the Memorial Death Camp, the Old Jewish Quarter and the Nazi Rally Grounds. Participants will attend two Saturday afternoon orientation sessions at UW-Whitewater in preparation for the 12-day trip.

The travel study program “Remembering the Holocaust” is sponsored by both the UW-Whitewater department of languages and literatures and the office of continuing education. The trip’s estimated cost is $3,700 per person and includes international flights, hotel accommodations, admission to museums and events, city guides, 16 meals, insurance and tuition. Registration must be completed by March 17, 2006, and applications can be requested at the travel study program office by calling (262) 472-1003, (800) 621-5376 or by e-mailing cetravelstudy@uww.edu.
