UW-Whitewater named 'School of the Year' by GLACURH
November 23, 2005
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was named the 2005 School of the Year, the highest honor awarded by the Great Lakes Association of College and University Residence Halls (GLACURH). UW-Whitewater was chosen in the medium school category based on university involvement efforts lead by the Residence Hall Association (RHA) including community service, leadership development, regional activities and overall programming.
“This award means a great deal to all of our student leaders who contribute to the success of UW-Whitewater as a whole,“ said Sandi Scott-Duex, assistant director of Residential Education.
Among RHA efforts helping to earn UW-Whitewater the award were its “Global Village” in White Hall, learning communities that group students with similar majors, Hurricane Katrina fundraisers and Leadership Involvement Team (LIT) programs like “Whitewater Idol,” “Little Sibs Weekend” and “Concert Under the Stars.” Laura Graupner Becker, White/Sayles assistant hall director, was also nominated by UW-Whitewater students as Advisor of the Year.
Students are the focus of GLACURH and the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH), and the award process is completely done by students. Students from each institution determine what the highlights of their particular institution are and then write a bid letter to a group of regional student leaders who decide the winners.
“The competition gave students the opportunity to reflect on the great work the residence hall student leaders have done and all the great things happening at UW-Whitewater,” Duex said.
UW-Whitewater’s bid will now compete on a national level at the NACURH conference in May 2006.
