The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wheelchair basketball team is well on their way to a fourth consecutive National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) title after opening the season with a 5-1 record.
“We have a very potent team offensively,” Head Coach Tracy Chynoweth said.
The six-game set that opened the season included wins against the University of Arizona, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Illinois. Leading scorers included sophomore Jeremy Campbell, sophomore Rob Welty, freshman Matt Scott, sophomore Jaime Mazzi, freshman Scott Harrington and freshman Bobby Finn.
Chynoweth said that he is excited about this year’s team and has high expectations both on and off the court. “I expect us to compete for the national championship and I also expect our team G.P.A. to improve from last year,” he said.
With a balance of both veteran and new players, the Warhawk wheelchair basketball team has a strong group of leaders and learners, both very skilled.
“The future of our program has great things in store for itself,” Chynoweth said.
The Warhawks next competition is Nov. 11-12 in Champaign, Ill. for the Illinois Invite where they will compete against the Milwaukee Wheelchair Bucks.- Cassandra Sura,suracc09@uww.edu
