Commerce Secretary Mary Burke to speak at commencement

Mary P. Burke, secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Commerce, will address approximately 663 students graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17 in the DLK/Kachel Fieldhouse.

Of the graduates, 90 will receive their master’s degrees and 573 will receive their bachelor’s degrees.

Amy Soleimani-Mafi, a Menomonee native graduating from the College of Arts and Communication, will be the student speaker.

Before coming to the Wisconsin Department of Commerce, Burke was director of forecasting and strategic planning for Trek Bicycle Corp. in Waterloo for almost 10 years. Currently, Burke is the president of the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County where she helped spearhead a $6 million fundraising drive to open a second location in Madison. She also is a member of the dean’s advisory board at UW-Madison’s Business School.

Burke has a BBA in finance from Georgetown University and an MBA from Harvard University. She has been the secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Commerce since January 2005.
