Multicultural student orientation welcomes new and returning students

Released: September 20, 2006

On Thursday, Sept. 14, UW-Whitewater hosted the Multicultural Student Orientation in Esker Hall to welcome new and returning students. The purpose of this orientation was to inform students about the more than 15 multicultural organizations available on campus. Representatives from Latinos Unidos, Black Student Union and The Southeast Asian Organization were just some of the organizations present at the event.

The two most important issues stressed at the orientation were, getting involved with one of these organizations will help students to better explore their racial and ethnic identities and students involved in multicultural organizations will be given peer and faculty support to help achieve academic success. "All you have to do is maintain a two," says Lamont Weaver, director of Academic Standards, meaning that students should be able to maintain a 2.0 grade point average.

Roger Pulliam, assistant vice chancellor of Academic Support Services said, "The Multicultural Student Orientation gives students a better understanding of the multicultural student organizations on campus and how these organizations intend to better assist students with their needs."

The orientation also addressed how UW-Whitewater is a family and students should take advantage of every resource they have available. Students are in college because they want to go somewhere in life and they should step fully into what they are doing in order to accomplish their goals, said Richard McGregory, director of the McNair/King Chavez Programs. Staff members present at the event emphasized how important it is for students to stay in school and pursue graduation.  For more information on how to get involved in a multicultural organization, contact Roger Pulliam at (262) 472-4985 or pulliamr@uww.edu.
