Students continue to excel on the CPA exam

Released: October 13, 2006

"We are not a one-hit wonder," Department Chair and Accounting Professor Robert Gruber said about the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's historic success on the uniform CPA examination.

Results from the Uniform CPA Examination show that from 2004-2006 UW-Whitewater accounting students have continued to excel, posting a first-time passing rate of 70 percent compared to the national average of 42 percent and a Wisconsin average of 52 percent.

"We've been in the top 10 more than any other school, so we're not surprised with our recent results on the CPA exam," Gruber said.  "While the format and content on the exams have changed, our accounting programs have maintained their high quality."

"We use the CPA exams to help keep us on task," Gruber added.  "Our instructors do not 'teach' the CPA exam, but instead, use it as a knowledge test to evaluate how well students understand the material."

According to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the job market for accountants continues to grow.  For the next seven to 10 years, the job market is said to remain strong giving graduates many opportunities in the business world.  Universities are urged to produce more accountants over the next few years in an effort to control the shortages in the market.  Auditors and taxation experts are especially in high demand.
