Lila Waldman receives Russell J. Hosler Award in Business Education

Released: October 20, 2006

For of her commitment to business education excellence, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Associate Professor of Information Technology/Business Education (IT/BE) Lila Waldman is the 2006 recipient of the Russell J. Hosler Award in Business Education.

"I am very dedicated to the business education profession at all levels and try to instill that attitude in my students," Waldman said. "I experiment with new methods to increase student learning and incorporate technology. I intend to work to increase enrollment in our business and marketing education programs at UW-Whitewater."

Waldman's work in business education has not gone unnoticed by her colleagues. "This award is great recognition for the work she?s done while she's been here and where she previously worked," said John Chenoweth, department chair and associate professor of IT/BE.

"Lila stood out from the rest of the candidates for several reasons," said Marcia James, professor of IT/BE and a Wisconsin Business Education Association executive board member. "She is a former student of Dr. Hosler, she is active in many of the same associations that he was active in, and she continues his enthusiasm for business education."

Striving for business education, Waldman's activism can be seen inside and outside of the classroom. She is also an active member in at least eight professional organizations, including the National Business Education Association, the International Society for Business Education, the Association for Business Communication and the National Association for Business Teacher Education.

She has provided service to her business organizations as a committee member and session coordinator at a number of the organizations' conferences. She has also reviewed journal articles published by these organizations. She is an associate professor of IT/BE and is the advisor for the UW-Whitewater College of Business Exchange Program in Mexico.

"It's especially nice to be recognized by people in my profession," Waldman said. She has some personal ties with this award, as Hosler was her advisor while she earned her master's degree at UW-Madison. Hosler's wife, Mary Margaret, was a professor of IT/BE at UW-Whitewater until 2005 and presented the award to Waldman.

As the recipient of the award, Waldman received a plaque and a gift of $500. She plans to donate her cash award to a Wisconsin business teacher to attend the International Society for Business Education conference summer 2007 in Vienna, Austria.

The Russell J. Hosler Award is an award that recognizes the man who began the Wisconsin Business Education Association, according to Marcia James. Judged by the WBEA Board of Selection, the recipient of the award is a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the development and advancement of business education.
