Make a Difference Day a success
Released: October 9, 2006
The City of Whitewater and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater came together once again to successfully serve the community during the second "Make a Difference Day," Friday Oct. 6.
Faculty and staff members, student organizations, sports teams and other groups participated in more than 40 community projects in support of a cleaner community benefiting its residents. "It's really all about the campus, community, and just working together to carry out one main goal," said Executive Director of Downtown Whitewater Allison Lodge. "Last year we had too many people and not enough projects. This year we made sure we had enough projects for everyone to get involved," she said.
More than 600 registered volunteers dispersed throughout the city picking up trash in area parks, repainting bicycle racks and trash receptacles in front of downtown businesses, and cleaning area business parking lots.
"We wanted to do our part to make a difference in the community," said UW-Whitewater juniors Sarah DuPree and Kirby Johnson. "A clean community isn't just good for the environment, it's good for all who live in it as well," Johnson said.
Besides cleaning and picking up trash, UW-Whitewater's Public Relations Student Society of America offered their services in a different way. Members of PRSSA gathered at the Central Administration Building of the Whitewater Unified School district to help sift through old computers to see if CD ROMs and hard drives could be salvaged. "Anything we cannot use will be donated to charity, repaired and then given to families in need," said Technology Coordinator for the Whitewater Unified School District Charlie Barr.
