Award-winning writer, composer James McBride visits campus

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will welcome James McBride, an award-winning writer and composer, as part of a new initiative by the College of Letters and Sciences to encourage reading across campus.

McBride will visit the campus at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2006 as part of the College of Letters and Sciences Contemporary Issues Lecture Series. McBride will speak about his memoir, "The Color of Water."

"The Color of Water" spent more than two years on the New York Times bestseller list, won the 1997 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Literary excellence and was an ALA Notable book of the year. In "The Color of Water" McBride writes both his autobiography and a tribute to the life of his mother.

Prior to McBride's visit, the College of Letters and Sciences and the Irvin L. Young Memorial Library will sponsor a series of discussions led by members of the UW-Whitewater languages and literatures department. The discussions will be at 7 p.m. and locations will vary. The first discussion will occur Thursday, Oct. 12 at the Irvin L. Young Memorial Library in Whitewater, followed by another discussion to take place Tuesday, Oct. 31 at the Fern Young Terrace. The last discussion will be Thursday, Nov. 9 again at the Irvin L. Young Memorial Library.

Students will also have the opportunity to read McBride?s memoir prior to his arrival on-campus in several classes both at the university and Whitewater High School.
