More than 150 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater students had their temperatures taken, blood pressure and pulse checked, iron count tested, answered a series of health questions and were strapped into chairs as the Biology Honor Society, Tri-Beta, hosted a blood drive with the Blood Center of Wisconsin on Wednesday, Oct. 11 from noon to 6 p.m. in Esker Hall.
Tri-Beta Secretary Erin Greuel was at the blood drive to help supervise, but she also wanted to donate blood. "There is a need for these blood drives, and it's a good thing to do," Greuel said. "It doesn't take much time to donate blood." Unfortunately, she was not accepted as a blood donor because her iron count was too low.
"Many of the students who belong to Tri-Beta are pre-med and pre-vet students," Greuel added. "Sponsoring a blood drive gets these students involved in a medical-related activity, and it also raises awareness of the constant demand for blood donations."
Tri-Beta hosts a blood drive once a semester and likes to keep its members involved in the biology field. Tri-Beta Vice President Michelle Jonovic is glad that they can host these blood drives. "It's a nice way for Tri-Beta to give back to the community," Jonovic said.
Sophomore Jake Bingen made it out to Esker to give blood. He has donated blood in the past, and would like to continue donating. "It's easier to donate on campus," Bingen said. Junior Niki Field also was able to donate. "It's a good thing to do," she said. "My dad always did it when I was little, and I want to keep the tradition going."- Abby Clark,clarkae12@uww.edu
