Released: November 3, 2006
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Minority Business Program students excelled at the annual Central Region Student National Association of Black Accountants Conference in Columbus Oct. 5-7.
Senior George Williams of Brooklyn Park, Minn., was the recipient of the $1,000 Crowe & Company Scholarship and graduate student Hyung Kwoun Choi of South Korea was the recipient of the Gleim's CPA Review Scholarship. Choi's scholarship covers the full cost of attending a preparation course for the CPA exam.
Four UW-Whitewater students: George Williams, Hyung Kwoun Choi, Stephanie Jones of Milwaukee and Wen Luo of Whitewater, were chosen for 16 interviews by 11 of the 34 companies (including Deloitte & Touche, Ernst & Young, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Grant Thornton and Cargill) that participated in the conference. Williams was selected for a second semester internship with Coleman & Williams in Milwaukee.
"How well the students in the minority business program did reflects the quality of the accounting program here at UW-Whitewater," said Freda Briscoe director of the Minority Business Program.
The focus of the conference is on career development and placement, as well as preparation for entry into the accounting/finance profession. Students had the opportunity to arrange for internship or permanent position interviews with corporate partners and exhibitors at the conference. Students could also attend workshops covering all areas of business including financial planning, management and entrepreneurship. Approximately 300 students from the Midwest attended the conference.- Sara Matoush,matoushsn18@uww.edu
