"If I could say only one thing to my fellow graduates, it would be to live with passion, for then, you can achieve anything," University of Wisconsin-Whitewater graduating senior Shauna Lee said. She will address her peers as the student speaker at winter commencement 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16 in the DLK/Kachel Fieldhouse.
A Union Grove native, Lee will graduate from the College of Education with a B.S.E. in Spanish. A member of the university honors program, Lee will graduate summa cum laude.
"The inspiration for my speech comes from a desire to reach every single person that will be a part of my audience on graduation day," Lee said. "I wanted to make sure that what I say when I'm at the podium is meaningful for everyone. I'm really hoping to remind my classmates how much support we have been given from our loved ones, from the staff and faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and from Whitewater's community at large. I'm also seeking to inspire students to give that same support to others after they leave this university."
Besides her involvement in the honors program, Lee was a percussionist for the Warhawk marching band, president of the forensics team and a member of four nationally recognized honor societies.
After graduation, Lee plans teach high school Spanish and/or English. She also plans to attend graduate school and hopes to become a college English professor. Her biggest dream, however, is to be a published author.
"I would genuinely love to see my classmates strive to go to bed each night with the confidence that they've done their best for that day and on days when they can't say that, they will have the fortitude to rise the next day and confront their shortcomings," Lee said.- Amanda Otto,ottoae31@uww.edu
