"We acknowledge the sacrifice our student-veterans make to serve and we recognize that they go through a transition when they return to school," Provost Richard Telfer said yesterday at UW-Whitewate's Veterans Day event.  "We hope this annual event can help our veterans."

Representatives from the registrar's office, academic advising and exploration center, university health and counseling services, center for students with disabilities, recreation sports and financial aid were all in attendance to help answer questions student-veterans might have.

"I am hoping that those veterans who have not yet applied for financial aid for this year will do so in the near future," Carol Miller, director of financial aid, said.  "Even though most veterans are receiving some kind of educational benefits, many of which cover tuition and fees, they may also be eligible for other federal and state aid that can go toward living expenses."

Senior Evan Wynn of Whitewater, a retired Army veteran of 22 years, was at the Veterans Day reception to help promote the newly created veterans club.  Wynn, who is pursuing a licensure in high school and adaptive physical education, said there is a great need for an organization like this on campus.

"Students coming out of the military at age 18, 19 or 20 find they no longer fit in with their peers," Wynn said.  "The veterans club will provide much-needed emotional support."

He added that membership is open to anyone on campus, not just to student-veterans.  "We welcome anyone who wants to help support our veterans and serve as a voice for them."

Freshman John Udovich of Palmyra signed up to be a part of the new veterans organization.  "I think it's a good idea.  It will be a good way for us veterans to help each other adjust to civilian life."
